Het is ‘Wist je dat?’ –woensdag!

We willen graag met jullie allerlei info en weetjes delen over salsa/latin cultuur: de muziek, de dans, de artiesten en heel belangrijk de geschiedenis. Voor sommigen zullen bepaalde feitjes al bekend zijn en voor anderen totaal niet. Het gaat erom dat iedereen iets meekrijgt van deze mooie cultuur.

Vandaag hebben we het over de pianist Eddie Palmieri.

Did you know that: 

  • Eddie Palmieri is in 1936 geboren in New York en had Puertoricaanse ouders.
  • Zijn oudere broer Charlie inspireerde hem om muziek te maken. Op 5 jarige leeftijd won Eddie met Charlie samen diverse talentenwedstrijden.
  • Toen Eddie 11 was deed hij een auditie om klassiek piano te spelen bij de Carnegie Hall. Dat zelfde jaar maakte hij zijn debuut in de prestigieuze muziekhal.
  • Op 13-jarige leeftijd stopte Eddie tijdelijk met piano spelen en probeerde de timbales uit. Hij speelde even de Latin band van zijn oom. De liefde voor timbales was voor korte duur: 2 jaar later ging Eddie weer terug naar piano spelen.
  • In 1955 kreeg Eddie zijn eerste muziekoptreden bij bas speler Johnny Segui. Na een jaar ging Eddie verder bij Vincentico Valdez, de voormalige zanger van Tito Puente’s band. 2 jaar later werd Eddie aanbevolen aan Tito Rodriguez en speelde toen in diens band.
  • In 1961 begon Eddie Palmieri zijn eigen band ‘Conjunto La Perfecta’. De band stond bekend om haar unieke instrumentatie van trombones en fluiten in plaats van trompetten, wat tot die tijd gangbaar was. Palmiere experimenteerde ook met de fusie tussen jazz en latin muziek.
  • Binnen een korte periode concurreerde La Perfecta met de 3 ander Latin Muziek Reuzen in New York: Machito, Tito Puente en Tito Rodriguez. In 1968 stopte La Perfecta als band te bestaan.
  • Eddie bleef experimenteren met Latin, Funk, Jazz en Salsa na de periode van La Perfecta. IN 1971 ging hij terug naar zijn Latin Roots toen hij het mega bekende nummer ‘Vamonos Pa’l Monte’ op nam.
  • Eddie Palmieri won veel prijzen en awards. Hij was de eerste persoon die een Grammy Award won voor een Latin album. In totaal won Palmiere 7 Grammy Awards.
  • Eddie maakt nog steeds muziek en zal op 15 december dit jaar zijn 80e verjaardag vieren.

We would like to share with you lots of information about our salsa/latin culture, about the music, about the beautiful dance, the amazing artists and the rich history and traditions. For some of you the facts that we share might already be known, for others it might be new information.

The topic of this weeks blog is famous pianist Eddie Palmieri.

Did you know that: 

  • Eddie Palmieri was born New York in 1936 to Puerto Rican parents.
  • He felt inspired to play music by watching his brother Charlie. At age 5 Eddie and his brother Charlie were winning talent competitions together.
  • Eddie auditioned to perform Classical Piano at Carnegie Hall at age 11. That same year debuted at that famous venue.
  • Eddie had stopped playing piano at age 13 and went on to play timbales in his uncles Latin Jazz band. The love for drums was short-lived: He said ‘Goodbye timbales’ by age 15 and went back to playing piano.
  • In 1955 Eddie got his first musical gig with bass player Jonny Segui. After one year he started playing with Vincentico Valdez, the vocalist for the legendary Tito Puente. And after two years Eddie was recommended to Tito Rodriguez and played with his band.
  • In 1961 Eddie formed his own band Conjunto La Perfecta. This band featured a unique instrumentation of trombones and flutes instead of trumpets. Palmieri also experimented by fusing jazz and Latin-style music.
  • Within a short period of time Palmieri’s band members found themselves competing with the big three Latin jazz giants of the time: Machito, Tito Puente, and Tito Rodriguez. In 1968 La Perfecta broke up.
  • After the break up of the band Eddie experimented with Latin, Funk, jazz and Salsa. And in 1971 he recorded the very famous song Vamonos Pa’l monte.
  • Eddie Palmieri won numerous awards. He was the first person to win a grammy for a Latin recording and won 7 Grammys in total.
  • Palmieri still makes music until this day and celebrates his 80th birthday on December 15, 2016.
