Het is ‘Wist je dat?’ –woensdag!

We willen graag met jullie allerlei info en weetjes delen over salsa/latin cultuur: de muziek, de dans, de artiesten en heel belangrijk de geschiedenis. Voor sommigen zullen bepaalde feitjes al bekend zijn en voor anderen totaal niet. Het gaat erom dat iedereen iets meekrijgt van deze mooie cultuur.

Vandaag hebben we het over de Puertoricaanse zanger Ismael Rivera (1931-1987).

Wist je dat:

  • Ismael Rivera op 17 jarige leeftijd al samen met jeugdvriend Rafael Cortijo muziek maakte. Op 23 jarige leeftijd speelde hij officieel in de band Cortijo y su Combo.
  • Een van de bekendste nummers van Cortijo y su Combo, waar Ismael Rivera op zong, ‘El Negro Bembon’ is. Check een hele oude opname van een piepjonge Ismael.
  • Cortijo y su Combo zich van de andere latin bands onderscheidde door de invloeden van de Puertoricaanse folkloristische muziek Bomba en Plena.
  • Ismael Rivera de bijnaam ‘El Sonero Mayor’ (de grote improvisator) had. Niemand minder dan mambolegende Beny Moré gaf hem die naam vanwege zijn unieke mix van de eerder genoemde Bomba en Plena achtergrond gemend met traditionele Cubaanse Son zangstijl.
  • Ismael 5 jaar in de gevangenis heeft gezeten vanwege drugsbezit. Dit heeft voor een breuk van Cortijo y su Combo gezorgd.
  • Tijdens deze breuk , een van de andere bandleden (Rafael Ithier) samen een aantal andere bandleden een eigen groep vormden. Dit was ‘El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico’ en is tot nu toe nog een van de succesvolste Salsa bands aller tijden.
  • Nadat Ismael vrij kwam schreef hij een nummer ‘Las Tumbas’ (de tombes) over zijn periode in de gevangenis en besloot hij zijn eigen band ‘Los Cachimbos’ te starten.
  • De band Los Cachimbos 8 jaar heeft bestaan en Rivera daarna solo verder ging. Toen schreef hij zijn grootste hit ‘Las Caras Lindas’
  • Rivera in de jaren ’70 veel andere jonge salsa muzikanten hielp opstarten, waaronder Ismael Miranda en Ruben Blades.
  • In 1979 in Parijs de openingsact was voor Bob Marley.
  • Ismael in 1987 overleed. In 2001 werd door de Puertoricaanse senaat 5 oktober (de geboortedag van Rivera) uitgeroepen tot nationale feestdag.

We would like to share with you lots of information about our salsa/latin culture, about the music, about the beautiful dance, the amazing artists and the rich history and traditions. For some of you the facts that we share might already be known, for others it might be new information.

The topic of this weeks blog the famous Puertorican singer Ismael Rivera (1931-1987).

Did you know:

  • That Ismael Rviera with age 17 already made music with his lifetime friend Rafael Cortijo. It was at age 23 when he officially joined Cortijo y su Combo.
  • One of the most famous songs of Cortijo y su Combo, with Rivera’s vocals, is ‘El Negro bembon’ Check out this old recording with a very young Ismael.
  • Cortijo y su Combo was unique for the influences of Puertorican folkloric music Bomba and Plena in their repertoire.
  • Ismael Rivera’s nickname was ‘El Sonero Mayor’ (the great improviser). The mambo legend Beny Moré gave him the nickname because of his mixture of Bomba and Plena influences mixed with traditional Cuban Son Singing style.
  • Ismael went to prison for 5 years because of drugscharges. That resulted in a breakup for Cortijo y su combo.
  • During the breakup one of the bandmembers, Rafael Ithier, formed a new band together with some of the other former Cortijo members. This band was called ‘El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico’ and is still one of the most succesful salsa bands ever.
  • After Ismael got out of jail he wrote a song about that dark period, called ‘Las tumbas’ (the tombs) and started his own band ‘Los Cachimbos’.
  • The band lasted for 8 years and after that Ismael went solo. It was then, when he wrote his greatest hit song: ‘Las caras lindas’
  • In the 1970’s Rivera helped young latin musicians , like Ismael Miranda and Ruben Blades, starting up their career.
  • That in 1979 Ismael was the opening act for Bob Marley in Paris
  • Rivera died in 1987. In 2001 the Puertorican senate acknowledged october 5th (Ismaels birthday) as a Puertorican national day.
